From what I recall, the journey down for the racers is at virtually a strolling tempo. Tire temp in all probability would not come into it a lot 🙂

For spectators, it is a parking zone on the way in which down as a result of the exit street is principally closed whereas all of the racers futz round within the pits. Takes hours.

Concerning the journey down, there isn’t any timing, no consequence of not being “first”, and possibly an entire lot of consequence to breaking your group’s automobile for no purpose in anyway.

So, a PS to this.

This previous weekend, I chatted with a great good friend–one other Pikes Peak common.

So I requested in regards to the journey down. Is it actually that dangerous?

Oh heck sure!

Would not matter how gradual you are going, chilly slicks is not going to follow ice/sleet/hail/and so forth.

He stated that one yr he practically slid off the primary activate the way in which down–and that is whereas going at like strolling tempo.

However he noticed a good friend up forward, one other Pikes Peak common, and he was inching alongside. So, my good friend figured, it was protected to proceed.

Collectively they inched down by practically zero-traction situations.

As soon as on the backside, they chatted. It went one thing like this:

“Dude, I did not assume I had sufficient traction to drive down, however I noticed you up forward so I figured we had sufficient.”

“Dude, I did not assume I had sufficient traction to drive down, however I noticed you behind me so I figured we had sufficient.”

I am confused by this: “…chilly slicks is not going to follow ice/sleet/hail/and so forth.”

If chilly slicks do not stick on the way in which down, how would they stick on the way in which up? Them being sizzling cannot presumably soften it within the milliseconds that they are in touch.

Now, if that ice/sleet/hail fashioned after their run up, then sure, that might be a giant deal.

I recall studying a narrative from someday again within the early Sixties, the place a pair drivers in inventory US full dimension automobiles (it might have been one of many Unsers and another person) raced one another down the mountain whereas coasting with their engines off.

I’ve nothing so as to add besides our brakes briefly caught hearth on the way in which down after we spectated at Pike’s in pre-COVID instances. There have been about 8 of us in a GX470. We have been “driving” at a couple of strolling tempo, however the grade forces you to be on the brakes principally 100% of the time.

In reply to calteg :

Agreed, I used to be overheating the brakes on the Vanagon at about 0.5 mph.

So if you happen to drive a Tesla down the mountain, your battery can be charged to about 1200% by the underside…

Bicycle braking technique:  Coast up to the mark and brake firmly to a gradual pace, then coast up once more.  The brakes run lots cooler this manner in comparison with sustaining a low pace, which on a motorcycle can blow a tire off the rim.  (Do individuals even run tubulars anymore?  These are a particular degree of hell once they overheat and the tire glue softens)

Issue: Used to experience a tandem with caliper brakes, and no fancy rear drum brake like I actually wished we had.

Tire heaters and favorable time of day assist lots going up.  You might have neither of these taking place, and the tires have been sitting, generally in freezing temps, for no less than an hour.
