On 1 July 1997, Britain returned Hong Kong to China. In a single day, Hongkongers gained a brand new identification as Chinese residents.
Since then, China has been eager to make sure town’s residents see themselves as Chinese.
However rising tensions between town and the mainland lately have created a deep suspicion of China amongst some Hongkongers.
On the twenty fifth anniversary of handover, we ask two Hongkongers born in that historic yr how they view their identification – and what being Hongkonger and Chinese means to them.
