BEIJING:

From a Chinese language soy sauce maker to an Asia-focused asset supervisor, firms in China are dashing to distance themselves from geopolitical tensions over Taiwan following final week’s go to to the island by a high-profile US official.

China claims self-ruled Taiwan as its territory, and the go to by US Home of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei final week – in defiance of Beijing’s warnings – has sparked a wave of Chinese language nationalism and big army drills.

Chinese language social media customers have focused firms and celebrities they see as unpatriotic or supportive of Taiwan’s independence with sturdy criticism – equivalent to sweet model Snickers, whose proprietor apologised final week for a product launch that was seen as suggesting Taiwan is a rustic.

On Saturday, Foshan Haitian Flavoring and Meals Co Ltd, China’s largest soy sauce maker by gross sales, issued a prolonged apology, saying it had fired an unidentified worker who attracted social media consideration with a personal submit that celebrated Pelosi’s go to.
